Most charities ask you to give. Dharma Care found a different way — one built on 30 years of rainforest hospitality, a genuine commitment to transparency, and a belief that your dollars should work as hard as possible for the people who need them most.
A retreat with a purpose
Nestled in the ancient Gondwana rainforests of northern NSW, Sine Cera Rainforest Retreat has been welcoming visitors since 1990. Yoga groups, family reunions, wellness practitioners, school camps, corporate teams, and couples have all found their way to its 200 acres of pristine bush — walking its ridgelines, swimming in its creeks, and exhaling the kind of deep breath that only stillness in nature allows.
What many guests don’t immediately realise is that Sine Cera isn’t a commercial tourism business. It was built by Dharma Care, and every dollar it generates flows directly back into our charitable programs — supporting people experiencing homelessness in the Northern Rivers, and funding education and health programs for vulnerable communities in Indonesia and Cambodia.

When you book a stay at Sine Cera, you’re not just investing in your own wellbeing. You’re helping fund someone else’s.
Why we chose enterprise over fundraising
Over the years, we’ve tried a range of approaches to sustain our work — including direct fundraising from donors. The honest truth is that traditional fundraising is hard, and for a small, regional charity without a large marketing budget, it hasn’t been the reliable engine we needed.
Sine Cera offered a different path. Rather than depending on donor generosity alone, we built an asset that could generate its own income — income that we could then direct entirely to the communities we serve. It’s a model that gives us stability, reduces our reliance on external funding cycles, and means that every booking carries real impact.
This social enterprise approach is also why we’re able to keep our administration costs to just 15% of donations — well below the sector average of 26–47%. Because Sine Cera helps cover the cost of running the organisation, donated dollars go further.

What your stay makes possible
In our most recent Impact Report, Dharma Care supported over 55,000 people, helped 64% more families than the year before, and delivered a 255% expansion in homelessness assistance. That reach wouldn’t be possible without the revenue Sine Cera generates.
Locally, Sine Cera income has been a key enabler of our Winter Warmer campaign — providing emergency relief, meals, and essential supplies to people sleeping rough or in crisis housing across the Queensland/NSW border region. It helps fund our partnerships with community organisations who work on the frontline of homelessness every day.
Internationally, it contributes to vocational training programs in West Java, education for girls in Cambodia, and child nutrition programs in Kalimantan — places where small investments create generational change.

The retreat gives twice
There’s one more dimension to the Sine Cera story that we’re particularly proud of. We don’t only host paying guests at full rates. Sine Cera also offers significantly discounted accommodation to families doing it tough, and to other charities and community groups who need a place to gather, plan, or simply rest.
So in a very real sense, the retreat gives twice — once by generating the income that sustains our programs, and again by opening its doors to the very communities we exist to support.

Not without its challenges
Like every asset in the Northern Rivers, Sine Cera has faced its share of disruption. Bushfires, floods, and COVID lockdowns all took a toll on bookings — and therefore on our capacity to fund programs. More recently, an extended road closure has made the retreat’s already-remote location harder to reach, impacting our income at a time when demand for our charity work has only grown.
These challenges are a reminder that even a resilient funding model needs support. When the retreat is fully booked, our programs thrive. When bookings are down, hard choices follow.

How you can help
You can donate directly to Dharma Care’s various work, support Sine Cera alone or book a stay at Sine Cera, or to help spread the word to people who might.
Here are a few simple ways to make a difference:
- Book a retreat — whether for a yoga group, a family getaway, a wedding, a corporate offsite, or a solo recharge.
Families and charities receive a 20% discount. - Gift a stay — Sine Cera makes a meaningful gift for someone who needs rest and reconnection, and every booking supports people in need.
- Share the retreat — if you know a retreat organiser, a yoga teacher, a business that runs team days, or a family looking for something different, point them toward Sine Cera.
- And yes, if you’d like to donate — that’s always welcome too. With DGR status, all donations to Dharma Care are fully tax-deductible.
Sine Cera has been described as a place where people come together in a beautiful natural setting to rediscover their humanity. That spirit — sincerity, care, and honesty — is exactly what drives everything Dharma Care does. Every stay is a small act of solidarity with someone, somewhere, who needed a hand.
