Project Update Summary: Stunting Prevention in Central Kalimantan

In Katingan Regency, Central Kalimantan—where nearly 30% of children face stunting—YUM Kalimantan has been implementing a community-driven Stunting Prevention Project to improve maternal and child health in Kasongan Lama Village.

Over the last few years our donors support of this project totalled $39,659 AUD.

The project engaged 95 pregnant women and 341 mothers through monthly health post visits and educational workshops, in collaboration with 14 trained community health volunteers (kader) across seven Posyandu (local health posts).

Key Outcomes:

97% of babies born through the program were within the normal WHO growth parameters.

Only 3% of babies showed signs of stunting—limited to a single case of twins.

75% of participating pregnant women scored in the high understanding category after completing stunting prevention training (up from just 12%).

95% of women maintained healthy upper arm measurements; 98% had normal hemoglobin levels.

Program Highlights:

Interpersonal skills and health training empowered kader to deliver 72 workshops on stunting, nutrition, anemia, and maternal care.

Monthly food packages tailored to local preferences were distributed for 10 months.

An additional ultrasound event was offered by a volunteer doctor, alongside Q&A sessions and prize giveaways.

Educational materials such as leaflets, booklets, and a Healthy Menu Recipe Book were created and distributed widely.

Critical health tools—like blood pressure monitors and baby scales—were provided to eight local Posyandu to ensure continued health checks.
