The Disaster’s Impact

The earthquake resulted in over 330 casualties, 7,729 injuries, 114,683 displaced survivors, and extensive damage to over 62,000 homes. It was the deadliest earthquake in Indonesia since 2018. In the following months, over 100,000 people found shelter in makeshift tents, enduring the rainy season and facing challenges in accessing clean water.

YUM’s Response

YUM, with over 45 years of experience in Cipanas, was uniquely positioned to provide long-term support to the affected community.

In total, close to 8,600 people in over 2,500 households including 1,525 children, 389 elderly, 24 pregnant women, 204 babies, 23 people with disabilities, and over 350 students across 3 schools have benefited directly from the support that was given.

Their response can be divided into several key areas:

On-the-Ground Assessments: YUM conducted continuous assessments and surveys to identify evolving community needs, focusing on families with specific vulnerabilities.

Distribution of Basic Needs: Relief kits, including food, hygiene products, and vitamins, were distributed to over 2,600 households, benefiting more than 8,500 individuals.

Capacity Building and Trauma Healing: YUM provided psychosocial support training to local staff and community members. Trauma healing sessions reached 740 children, helping them cope with the emotional aftermath of the earthquake.

School Support: YUM supported 100 school-age children from vulnerable families by providing school uniforms, enabling them to return to school and regain a sense of normalcy.

School Repairs: YUM identified two severely damaged schools and assisted in repairing classrooms, allowing 254 students to resume their studies in safer environments.

Repairs of Vocational Training Center Building: The building housing YUM’s vocational training programs was repaired to ensure the safety of students and staff.
